KUCHING: The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) is actively tracking down those who illegally dump their rubbish in its areas.

MPP chairman Lo Khere Chiang said several companies and individuals had agreed to collect the rubbish they dumped illegally and to properly dispose of it after being contacted by the council.

He said the public had played a crucial role in channelling their concerns as well as providing evidence such as pictures and video footages of the culprits in action.

“This issue has been around for a long time and it’s been an uphill battle for MPP. I had received complaints from the public who came forward with pictures and videos of the licence plates of people who illegally dumped their rubbish.

“With that information, we have approached the people who did it. We find the owners of the vehicles through JPJ (Road Transport Department) and we have called up the companies and they have agreed to come and collect their rubbish. They acknowledge their mistakes and are embarrassed by them,” said Lo.

He was speaking to reporters during his visit to an illegal dumping site at Stapok Utara here today.

Lo said MPP is vigorously keeping the streets free of illegal dumping while open to collaborating with other agencies to achieve its target.

“I want to listen to them and find out how to resolve this issue. I am also receiving information which could help us tackle this issue for all areas under MPP,” he said.

During the visit, Lo also commended the efforts of residents who tried to resolve the illegal dumping issue plaguing the housing area.

“I hope that through education, information and the participation from everyone working together, we can change the mindset of our people,” he added.
