SERIAN: As part of the Environmental Tour Programme, Dr Hazland Abang Hipni paid a visit to Kampung Bedup, Serian on Tuesday (July 12) to survey the transportation system and garbage disposal in the area.

The Deputy Minister for Energy and Environmental Sustainability stressed the need for Waste to Energy technology to be implemented as it not only guaranteed more sustainable waste management but also ensured the wellbeing of society as a whole.

Also present during the visit were Bukit Semuja assemblyman John Ilus, representatives from the Natural Resources and Environment Board (NREB), Department of Environment (DoE) and Serian District Council.

The issue of waste disposal has cropped following the increase in the amount of garbage due to the rise in the urbanisation rate and rapid population growth.

Many assumed that solid or domestic waste produced from daily human activities should be disposed of directly at a landfill.

However, many should be reminded of the fact that solid waste could be processed into a source of energy and materials through solid waste disposal methods to energy or Waste to Energy technology.
