KUCHING: Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said advancing digital transformation is key towards improving productivity and efficiency.

“We need to fully embrace digital transformation to maximise the economic value in the global business environment that is dynamic and volatile,” he said.

And as the state progresses, Abang Johari said it needs to enhance its productivity to remain competitive, while simultaneously creating a clean, healthy and resilient environment that will last for generations.

Sarawak, he said, embarked on the digital economy in 2018 to shift its dependence on a non-renewable resources economy.

‘The first Digital Economy Strategy (2018-2022) which was launched in December 2017, is coming to an end this year,” he said at the opening of the International Digital Economy Conference Sarawak 2022 (IDECS 2022) at Borneo Convention Centre Kuching today.

“The Strategy comprises 47 strategic actions in eight economic sectors and seven enablers.”

Towards this end the Premier said Sarawak has successfully enhanced the state’s economic development through transformations of several key sectors since the commencement of the digital economy agenda in 2018.

These include the agriculture sector, oil palm industry, e-commerce, finance and fintech, digital government, smart city, tourism, manufacturing and services industry, he said.

The Premier expressed confidence in Sarawak being a thriving society driven by data and innovation in the future, with careful planning, commitment, partnership and focusing on delivery excellence.

“The Sarawak government is ambitious about Sarawak’s digital future. Our goal is to be a leading digital economy and society by 2030.

“In summary it means that there will be a frictionless government service delivery, all businesses are digitally driven businesses, Sarawak has a vibrant and globally competitive technology sector, thriving high growth industries, all Sarawakians have access to digital skills and technology and that Sarawak is cyber secure.”
