MIRI: As part of Miri City’s 14th anniversary celebration on May 20 this year, the city council (MCC) yesterday announced a ‘Discover Uniquely Miri’ contest.

The contest is divided into two sections, essay writing and photography and both are open to Malaysians and foreigners.

“The contest is aimed at promoting Miri’s tourism sector,” Miri city mayor Adam Yii said at a press conference yesterday.

For the essay section, the contest is divided into three categories (three languages) namely English, Malay and Chinese.

The closing date for submission of entries for the essay contest is April 7.

“Essays for the contest must be between 3,500 and 7,000 words in length. The contest is open to those who want to share their experiences in travelling to tourist attractions in Miri including Mulu, Niah and Marudi,” Yii said.

The entries would be judged by three bodies namely Persatuan Penulis Utara Sarawak (Putera), Chinese Writer Association Miri and Society of English Writers Northern Zone.

The top three winners of the essay contest will receive trophies and cash of RM1,500 (first prize), RM1,000 (second prize) and RM500 for third prize.

Five consolation prize winners will each receive RM150.

Meanwhile, the photography competition has five categories namely human interest (culture and tradition), scenery, event, food and nature. It is also open to Malaysians and foreigners and each entry must comprise a set of five photographs.

The closing date for submission of entry is April 30.

Lucrative prizes await winners of the photography competition.

The first prize winner will receive RM2,000, while the second and third prize winners will receive RM1,500 and RM1,000, respectively.

Five consolation prize winners will each receive RM200.

Entry forms for the essay and photography contests are obtainable from MCC and can be submitted to Urusetia Esei dan Fotografi Seksyen Perpustakaan, Perpustakaan Awam Miri, Majlis Bandaraya Miri ,Tingkat 2, Dewan Suarah, Miri.
