KUCHING: Don’t accept jobs from strangers. This is the advice of Welfare, Community Wellbeing, Women, Family and Childhood Development Minister Datuk Seri Fatimah Abdullah to job seekers in the state.

She was speaking at a press conference after arriving from Cambodia yesterday with the 43 Malaysians who had been released from a prison there on board a special charter flight.

“These people who got detained got the jobs from a friend they knew from a social app namely, Wechat.

“Think rationally and logically when it comes to jobs with high pay.  Go and check with related agencies to verify the companies which offer you the jobs. Find out whether they exist or not,” she added.

“We were really sad to see the detainees and we would advise them not to simply accept any jobs from strangers anymore.”

Fatimah added that in view of the recent incident which happened to the 40 Sarawakians who went to work in Cambodia, the state government welcomed the setting up of genuine agencies which could help job seekers look for overseas jobs or verify any companies offering jobs to people.

Forty seven Malaysians (40 Sarawakians, three Sabahans, three from Selangor and one from Kuala Lumpur) were detained in Banteay Meanchey prison in Cambodia for two months since December 16  after they were caught operating an online gambling site in the province.

They were victims of scammers who had offered them each a high salary of US$1,500 which is equivalent to RM6,117.
