MIRI: Telang Usan assemblyman Dennis Ngau has reminded youths from longhouses to never forget their roots.

Speaking at a gathering organised by Daleh Long Bedian Social and Welfare Association, he said youths must take interest in activities related to their longhouses.

“While the trend of youths leaving their longhouse to seek opportunities in cities and towns is good for their advancement, they must not ignore or lose interest in activities in their longhouses.

“It’s the culture…each generation will inherit their village and family assets, so the current generation must make it a point to return home at least twice a year,” he stressed.

On education, Dennis proposed that youths make lifelong education a priority in their lives.

“If you look around in our country, we Malaysians are a fortunate lot…that the previous government had put in place various opportunities for our citizens to do or advance their education level,” Dennis said.

“In today’s busy and hectic life, one must not forget to keep abreast of what’s going on or happening in the country, especially in the state.

“Every now and then, our Chief Minister and the state government will announce new initiatives for the rakyat, all these are done for the sole benefit of our people,” he pointed out.

Dennis said according to studies, those born between the end of WWII and the mid-sixties were relatively unmoved by lies or transgressions that did not do anyone obvious harm.

“They prized good intentions and are willing to tolerate a lot from people, their hearts are in the right place. This could be as a result of non availability of modern communication facilities we have today such as Facebook, WhatsApp, etc where lies or half-truths are easily spread,” he said.

“Therefore, we must exercise caution when dealing with information spread via social media.”

More than 200 youths aged between 18 and 40 years old attended the inaugural event.
