Drug trafficker, murderer’s appeal against death sentence dismissed

KUCHING: A local person and an Indonesian man both failed in their bid to escape the gallows after the Federal Court dismissed their appeals against their respective charges here yesterday.

The local, Abdul Hafiz Abdul Latif, 31, was convicted of drug trafficking while the Indonesian, Yosep Yangubani, was found guilty of murder.

A five-panel judge led by Justice Ahmad Maarop unanimously maintained the death sentences imposed on them.

Abdul Hafiz was charged under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drug Act 1952 which provides for a mandatory death sentence. He was found guilty of the possessing 1099.8g of cannabis at his rented house in Taman Uni, Kota Samarahan on July 25, 2015.

Charged under Section 302 of the Panel Code Yosep was found guilty of murdering his compatriot Ropinas Muda Tabu using a parang at an oil palm estate in Sungai Luam in Mukah on Aug 5, 2014.
