KUCHING: The Sarawak government is committed to creating an eco park with the principle of ‘plant and care’ in every residential area of the Samariang constituency for the preservation of the environment and local community.

Samariang assemblywoman, Datuk Sharifah Hasidah Sayeed Aman Ghazali believes that an eco park approach that emphasises the principle of planting and caring can make residential areas clean while making the community aware of green environmental conservation systems.

“The eco park is actually very good for the people and it is a project to beautify the surrounding environment and social aspects.

“With this eco park, all communities can create a place to spend leisure time, have fun and meet with other members of the community.

“Therefore, such projects will be continued and implemented in other areas in the Samariang constituency, especially residential areas, so that we can collaborate with the community,” she said.

She said this when officiating at the Tatai Kumang Eco Park inauguration ceremony in Petra Jaya here yesterday (Feb 25).

According to her, the project was organised by the Natural Resources and Environment Board Sarawak (NREB) in collaboration with the Kuching North City Hall (DBKU).

Also involved were the Sarawak Agriculture Department, Sarawak Forestry Department, Sarawak Energy Berhad, Trienekens (Sarawak) Sdn Bhd, and ZHA Environmental Sdn Bhd.

Sharifah said that Tatai Kumang Eco Park is the first park established in the area through collaboration between seven related agencies.

Tatai Kumang means a beautiful place for beautiful people, synonymous with efforts to green the environment by creating an eco park for the community there to enjoy.

The 0.89-acre park, which was originally empty land, has been filled with 46 types of trees planted by the community, including dabai, mangosteen, rambutan, mango, nanga, ciku, and crystal trees.

The green aspect is the main component emphasised in the park by creating green features such as planting grass, fruit trees, and using solar systems for lights in the park area.
