KUCHING: A total of 80 single mothers received scarves last Wednesday during the United People’s Party (UPP) Women’s Day celebration held at KTS Garden, here.

In his speech when officiating at the event Second Minister of Finance, Dato Sri Wong Soon Koh, urged the women to equip themselves with a strong character for them to be able to face the challenges and the stress of life.

Women have to be able love themselves, a strong faith and a mission in life, Wong, who is also UPP president, pointed out.

“One must be able to love themselves, so that they can stand their ground when they face challenges while at the same time, they must have confidence and belief to what they stand for.

“Most importantly, anyone who lives in this world without a direction, a mission will always be stagnant and not develop themselves in many aspects.

“Hence, we must have a mission, a goal, whether it is small or big, to fulfill our need for achievements in life,” said Wong.

The celebration was themed ‘Be Bold, For Change’, which is the international theme for this year’s Women’s Day celebration.

Wong then added that more equal rights should be given to women, particularly in the his party (UPP).

“Show good examples to our women comrades and teach them what they need to know and they may be just as capable as many of us here,” said Wong.

Also speaking was the Organising Chairwoman of the event, Sharon Wong who said that the world should give more recognition to the contribution of women.

“Women are the key contributors to many things be it in the society, family, economy, politics and many more.

“Thus, we hope that women are given equal recognition towards their contribution worldwide,” said Sharon.
