MIRI: The water woes of consumers in Kuala Sibuti, Tiris, Sulap Lada, Kelulit, Saeh, Terahad and the Immigration depot in Bekenu will be a thing of the past once the Bekenu booster station and Tiris high level water tank are completed.

The movement control order (MCO) which was imposed in March this year, following the Covid-19 pandemic has delayed the construction works of these two projects. However, the contractors have given their assurance to complete the projects within this year.

This was disclosed by Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan yesterday after he conducted a site visit to the Bekenu booster station and Tiris high level water tank.

He was accompanied by Assistant Minister for Women, Family and Childhood Development Rosey Yunus who is also Bekenu assemblywoman, Assistant Minister of International Trade and Industry, Industrial Terminal and Entrepreneur Development Datuk Mohd Naroden Majais, Sibuti MP Lukanisman Awang Sauni and Lambir assemblyman Ripin Lamat.

The Bekenu booster station and Tiris high level water tank are fully funded by the Sarawak government at a cost of RM14 million to solve low water pressure issues within the surrounding areas.

“We hope that once the projects are completed, the water issues in these areas (Bekenu and Tiris) would be a thing of the past,” Awang Tengah said.

Other projects funded by the State government in the area include installation of new water pipes at a cost of RM26 million.

The project is scheduled for completion in September this year.
