STATE ELECTION

KUCHING: Standard operating procedures (SOPs) must be well-implemented in order for the state election to run smoothly.

Yayasan Perpaduan Sarawak (YPS) chief executive Datuk Aloysius Dris said this is imperative for Sarawak’s unity as without a strong government, the state would not be able to progress and development will be slowed down.

“In addition to SOPs (standard operating procedures) being well-implemented throughout the election, unity and harmony must also be safeguarded throughout the campaign process and beyond as we do not want a situation where we stumble upon mistakes later,” he said in a statement today.

He said while it is inevitable that the state election needs to be held, it is on the Election Commission (EC) to seek the best procedures with well-controlled and well-implemented SOPs in light of the Covid-19 pandemic.

“There are examples of countries where elections were held during the pandemic such as Singapore, South Korea and New Zealand.

“The state election is bound to happen anytime soon especially with the State Legislative Assembly due to be dissolved in June next year.

“This has been mentioned many times by the state leaders and the message is clear that the state election is dawning upon us,” he added.
