KUCHING: A Kampung Benuk lass, Eve Isabelle Ronald, 19, was crowned Dayung Gawea Tematu 2019.

She defeated nine other contestants during the final of the beauty contest held at Kampung Tematu multipurpose hall near here on Saturday night.

With the win, Eve walked away with RM1,700, a trophy, a hamper and a certificate.

Agnes Anastha Amat, 21, from Kampung Jagoi Bogag, was adjudged first runner-up. She received RM1,400, a trophy, hamper and certificate.

Irine Yap Hui Xin, 19, from Kampung Bumbok was second runner-up. She won RM1,000, a trophy, a hamper and a certificate.

Seven other finalists received consolation prizes of RM100, a hamper and a certificate each.

Meanwhile, the seven subsidiary title winners are Sue Zane Melanie (Miss Tourism), Agnes Anastha Amat (Miss Photogenic), Sue Zane Melanie (Miss Talent), Agnes Anastha Amat (Miss Traditional), Eve Isabelle Ronald (Miss Popularity), Sue Zane Melanie (Best Costume) and Jacline Sahfica Brucly (Miss Commitment). They each received RM200 and a trophy.

In the traditional music and dance competition, a culture troupe Oyak Ba’ai from Kampung Atas Singai won the first prize while first runner-up went to Staak B’Somu, also from Kampung Atas Singai. The second runner-up was Timogah Borneo Group from Kampung Tematu.

In the kids beauty contest, the champion was Mary Madelin David Melen, 8, from Kampung Tematu, first runner-up Abigail Ara Jasni, 8, from Kampung Segong Singai and second runner-up was Shirly Raynold, 8, from Kampung Tebawang Sauh.

The competitions were held in conjunction with the 6th Tematu Gawai Carnival 2019, which was graced by Assistant Minister for Youth and Sports, Datuk Snowdan Lawan.

Among those present at the event was Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang who is also Padawan Municipal Council chairman.

The guests were also entertained by cultural performances by staff of the State Cultural and Arts Department.
