SIBU:  Pulau Bruit Graduates Association secretary Raduan Serap recommended youth to pursue a career as sailors and subsequently raise the socio-economic status of their families.

He urged parents to encourage their children to become sailors.

“Congratulations also to Pulau Bruit Graduates Association and the exco for organising the basic shipping course with the government agencies involved,” he said.

He was speaking at the closing ceremony and the presentation of internship offer letters to the basic shipping course participants at a local hotel on Friday.

A total of 52 trainees completed the course which took place for over one month. The shipping company involved also presented offer letters to 28 trainees and the course certificates to the 24 participants involved.

Raduan added that upon the completion of their internship, the trainees could immediately join the company.

“Among the courses offered were basic training, ship security awareness and other basic shipping theories. After that, they can undergo a six-month internship upon completion of the course.

“These trainees will qualify as sailors after six months of practical training and if they continue to work and serve for 36 months and meet the prescribed requirements, then they will be eligible to sit for the deckhand or engine officer test,” he continued.

The first batch of course participants of 13 people in 2016 have found jobs.
