KUCHING: The Sarawak Disaster Management Committee (SDMC) is always in a state of preparedness to face any eventuality of natural disasters.

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas said a few meetings have been conducted to discuss preparations on the possibility of a dry and hot weather.

He assured that Sarawak has the structure and mechanism in place to handle natural disasters.

“This involves agencies like the police, fire, and rescue department, medical and welfare department among others,” he said when met by reporters at the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS) convocation ceremony today.

Uggah, who is SDMC chairman, revealed that the committee will be having a meeting to look at the facilities especially in terms of frontliners, temporary evacuation centres (PPS), food stocks and so on.

He said the committee also works with a team from UNIMAS for radio communication in areas that cannot be reached via telephone, fixed line, or internet.

“We also have the Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) situated in the interior with the purpose of being prepared in the event of natural disasters like floods.

“If our back up machinery has not reached the location then the CERT will be mobilised to assist in moving the community out of the flooded area to a safe place and take care of food supply distribution for instance,” he added.
