KUCHING: Petra Jaya MP Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof has been appointed as the deputy prime minister in the new Federal Cabinet.

This is also a historical moment for Sarawak as it witnessed the first Sarawakian MP being appointed as the deputy prime minister.

The deputy prime minister’s post was announced by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim during a press conference in Kuala Lumpur this evening.

Fadillah, who is also the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) chief whip will also be holding the post as the Minister of Plantation and Commodity.

Also re-appointed to the Cabinet were Santubong MP Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri who is appointed as Women Development, Family and Community Minister and Kapit MP Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi who is appointed as Works Minister.

Meanwhile, Bintulu MP and Progressive Democratic Party (PDP) president Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing was named as Tourism, Arts and Culture Minister.

At the same time, Kanowit MP Datuk Aaron Ago Dagang was appointed as National Unity Minister.

The new Cabinet ministers will be sworn in at 3pm tomorrow.

For the record, in the last administration, GPS was represented by four full ministers, one of which was a senior minister.

The latest lineup will see an increase of one full minister – taking the total to five – while also occupying a deputy prime minister position.
