SIBU: The state government will provide free tertiary education to over 25,000 prospective students in all state-owned universities and higher learning institutions starting from 2026.

Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg made the announcement at the 8th convocation of University of Technology Sarawak (UTS) here on Sunday.

He said recognising the transformative impact of education, the state government is steadfast in its commitment to supporting underprivileged parents and students.

This commitment is epitomised by this groundbreaking initiative, he said, pointing to the importance of human capital development.

The forward-thinking approach, said Abang Johari, underscores the government’s dedication to fostering educational opportunities and nurturing the aspirations of the next generation.

In this respect he paid tribute to the contribution made by UTS to education and human capital development.

He said the university plays a crucial role in enhancing workforce efficiency, facilitating the upward movement of economies along the value chain.

“This university has not only produced a plethora of graduates but has consistently delivered quality professionals who are in high demand by employers.

“UTS is also recognised as the leading technical and vocational education and training (TVET) institution in the country,”  he said.

Abang Johari, who is also UTS Pro Chancellor added that the university has nurtured a force of graduates who have ventured successfully into entrepreneurship, a testament to the calibre of education imparted by UTS.

“As we stand at the border of a new chapter, graduates, I wish you to reflect on the thoughtful impact that education has had on your lives.

“The knowledge you have acquired, the friendships you have created, and the challenges you have overcome have all contributed to the individuals you have become.

“As you step into the world beyond these university walls, carry with you the intellectual curiosity that has been nurtured here and let it guide you in your future undertakings,” he said.
