KUCHING: Starting a business by selling murtabak, Nurul Ain Syafawani Khamis 22, now moves forward by selling “kuih keria” to customers.

According to her, she has been in the business selling murtabak since 1998 which is a family recipe.

“I started selling ‘kuih keria’ in 2019 by sharing a stall next to my brother and mother’s business at the time.

“We have been doing business in the Gita area opposite the Gita hall before being moved to a new place by the North Kuching City Hall (DBKU),” she told New Sarawak Tribune.

According to her, they are now moving to Gita’s futsal field to continue the business that has been carried out before.

“Basically, I was born into a family that does business, but it is not an obstacle to give myself the opportunity to try this field.

Nurul’s late father, Khamis Isnin, while managing their sales stall.

“I started this ‘kuih keria’ business with my own savings based on business tips from my mother and late father,” she said.

According to Nurul, the small-scale business gives encouraging returns especially in helping husbands to support their families.

“Alhamdulillah, for now both Murtabak Boom and kuih keria sales are very well received by customers.

“The recipe for kuih keria that I sell is a recipe handed down by my mother and meets the tastes of all people,” she said.

She added that she always opens reservations to the public regardless of the time depending on their requests.

There are several flavors of kuih keria sold including gula apong, keria gula pasir, keria balls and gula Melaka keria.

Meanwhile, murtabak consists of murtabak boom chicken and meat which are each priced at RM3.50 and RM4.

“I sell kuih keria at the rate of RM1 for three pieces for all the flavors offered.

“Usually we will operate every day at the stall and will make deliveries to customers if there is time to spare,” she added.

According to Nurul, she starts her sale from 11.30 am to 5.30 pm at the futsal hall, Gita.

So far, the majority of her customers are the residents of the area and sometimes she also receives catering orders from customers.

“I hope this business will grow to a higher level to bring its own brand outside of Sarawak,” she added.

Despite the various challenges and conjectures she faced, she hoped that she would continue to persevere and be strong in facing them.
