LAWAS: The Lun Bawang community must unite in bringing victory to the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS), especially in the Lawas parliamentary seat in the 15th General Election (GE15).

Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hasan said if the ethnic group is divided among themselves, it will deprive them of experiencing progress and development in the future.

“There are groups that are always against development. If it wasn’t for Henry Sum Agong (Lawas incumbent), the upgrade works of the road for the Ba’Kelalan area would be hard,” he said.

He said this during the launching of the SarawakKu Sayang programme at Kampung Long Tuma, here today (Nov 8).

According to Awang Tengah, the previously united Lun Bawang community was divided after the emergence of Baru Bian, who brought in the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) to the area.

“We used to be united, but the spreading of the political culture from the peninsula here had changed the situation. All kinds of issues were raised and eventually the people of Lun Bawang split into two.

“I am saddened to see our community, especially the Lun Bawang, being divided,” he expressed.

In the meantime, he stated that the Sarawak Government has planned many developments, especially in Lawas.

Aside from plans to have joint border development, he said that the state government will also improve road connections, electricity, telecommunications and economic activities.

“We plan to connect Limbang and Lawas with the electricity grid by the end of 2023, if there are no obstacles.

“Furthermore, we also want to improve the telecommunications network including looking at economic activities that can be focused on as we already have a master plan for the expansion of Lawas town,” he said.
