BELAWAI: The Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) led government sees the huge tourism potential in Belawai and is committed to further develop the area.

Urban Planning, Land Administration and Environment Assistant Minister Datuk Len Talif Salleh said with the infrastructure and development in place, Belawai will no longer be a remote area as compared to 30 years ago.

“With the beach and its surrounding nature, the sports activities and other programmes that are being held here… Belawai might even be called a mini Hawaii when all the developments are completed,” he said at the launch of Belawai Beach Carnival yesterday.

Len added that in four years’ time, with the construction of Jalan Pasi, which links Sarikei and Tanjung Manis, people from Sarikei could reach Belawai within 45 minutes compared to two and a half hours presently.

The Kuala Rajang assemblyman also said that with the completion of Kapit-Sibu road, local products from Kapit could be easily transported to Tanjung Manis to be exported overseas via its deep sea port.

“All these developments are from the GPS government for the benefit of its people.

“And the current leadership under Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Abang Johari Tun Openg has always been committed to developing Sarawak,” he pointed out.

He reassured the people that GPS would continue to bring greater development to Sarawak which will benefit the people and the future generation.

On the carnival, Len said the event has grown bigger since it started 20 years ago, and hoped it could attract more locals and tourists to the area.

“This programme is for the people, and there will be continuous efforts to develop it and to improve the local economy.”
