SIBU: The Sibu urban renewal plan is expected to benefit the Dayak community here in terms of affordable housing, community halls, and so on, said Sarawak Dayak National Union (SDNU) Sibu branch chairman Chambai Lindong.

According to him, the development plan will also encompass the Dayak community, as they have been working together with other communities to help Sibu develop all this time.

“As each family has three to five people living in a house, there is a dire need for attention from the government and the planners of the Sibu Urban Renewal Programme project, which is currently in the planning stage, to look into the housing needs of the community.

“The Dayak community lives here to seek a better life, educate their children, and work. They live here permanently and only return to their villages occasionally for visits. If Sibu develops, our community must also develop because they are part of Sibu,” he said in his opening speech at the Sibu 2023 pre-Gawai Dayak celebration here last night (May 13).

Therefore, Chambai called on the government, especially for the upcoming programme, not to neglect providing benefits to the Dayak community through the implementation of the project.

Meanwhile, on Sibu SDNU’s quest to set up a Dayak Food Court, Chambai said they have received a positive response from Sibu Municipal Council (SMC).

“We hope our dreams will come true and the Dayak Food Court can be realised. This is not something new because we already requested it from Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Alfred Jabu (former Deputy Chief Minister) and Datuk Seri Wong Soon Koh (former Second Finance Minister) in the past,” he added.

During the event, Danggang Ugik, representing the Deputy Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong, announced an allocation of RM10,000 to the Sibu pre-Gawai Dayak celebration committee.
