KUCHING: i-CATS University College (i-CATS) has collaborated with Bank Rakyat to organise a corporate social responsibility (CSR) project and donated RM10,000 in efforts to help with the welfare of the community in Kampung Sibu Laut yesterday.

The CSR project consisted of 30 students and 25 staff, with the students chosen to go as part of their community service subject in their university.

The journey to Kampung Sibu Laut, required a boat ride of around 10 minutes from the Telaga Air jetty.

Vice chancellor of iCATS Professor Dr Shahren Ahmad Zaidi Adruce said that the CSR project would enable an extensive opportunity for research and help promote the university to the local communities as well as provide assistance.

He added that by organising programmes such as this, i-CATS hoped that it could contribute to the communities across Sarawak.

Dr.Shahren made comparisons of the roles of universities today and in the past.

“Previously, the purpose of a university was to focus on academics. Currently, it has changed, besides educating, we want to transform the communities around us,” he told reporters before the start of the CSR project at Kampung Laut Sibu yesterday (Nov 26).

Meanwhile, the director of the programme, Dahlia Bujang disclosed that four activities were held during the CSR programme.

She said the four activities included painting the surau followed by installing solar lights in its surrounding areas

Adding further, she hoped that the solar lights would help the community in the area to commute around.

Besides that, there were also hydroponic installations which were carried out by iCATS University College using a solar system which could further expose the locals to modern farming.

“The iCATS University College students were also involved in communal work to help ensure Kampung Sibu Laut is clean,” she added.
