KUCHING: Federal Court judge Tan Sri Idrus Harun has been appointed as the new Attorney-General for a two-year period, effective yesterday.

He replaces Tan Sri Tommy Thomas, 65, who quit the post following Tun Dr Mahathir Mohammad’s decision to step down as the country’s seventh prime minister. Tommy handed his resignation to Dr Mahathir, then the interim prime minister, on February 28.

“In line with Clause (5) of Article 145 of the Federal Constitution, His Majesty Yang di-Pertuan Agong has consented to the application by Tan Sri Tommy Thomas to shorten his tenure as Attorney-General effective February 28, 2020,” a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) disclosed yesterday.

The statement said the government was grateful to Thomas for his services to the country during his tenure in office.

“In accordance with Clause (1) of Article 145 of the Federal Constitution, His Majesty the Yang di-Pertuan Agong also approved the appointment of Federal Court judge Tan Sri Idrus Harun as the new Attorney-General for a two year period, effective March 6, 2020,” the statement added.
