KUCHING: Smokers have been advised to cease smoking in eateries as the no-smoking ban is already in effect, said Kuching South City Council (MBKS) mayor Datuk James Chan.

He stated that the state government has the council’s full support in the ban as it is for the benefit of the people in Kuching.

“In China, the government is also focusing on preventing people to smoke and comparing it with the city of Kuching, why don’t we do the same?

“China is a country with a huge population and Kuching is just a city in Malaysia, therefore if China can manage to prevent people from smoking, then Kuching should be able to do the same,” Chan said.

He also added that the government is being fair as smokers are allowed to smoke in closed-off areas nearby eateries.

“If it is possible, I advise the smokers to cut down on smoking and lead a healthier lifestyle,” he added.

Vape user Al Nazirul, 23, said that the ban is a good thing that the state government has implemented as there are families in eateries and a lot of them do not tolerate having cigarette smoke blown towards them.

“Sometimes when people smoke in eateries, they do not know that a smallest puff from a cigarette can trigger one’s asthma attack.

“With the implementation of the ban, I hope all the smokers and vape users abide by the rules,” he said.

He added that even before the smoking ban was implemented, he will always practice the habit of excusing himself to go outside of eateries to vape as he understands what it is like to have cigarette smoke being blown towards him.
