LABUAN: The inaugural Labuan Media Run 2019 kicked-off with a huge success, with participants from all over Borneo taking part in the event at Dataran Labuan yesterday.

Prominent extreme runners from Sabah dominated the field, winning both the veteran men’s and women’s category and women’s open category.

With the tagline, ‘Run for Health’, the event received more than 200 runners from Sabah, Sarawak, Brunei and Labuan including from those who have made history in the international extreme runs nationwide.

The former champion of Mt Kinabalu International Climbathon, Guianus Salagan and his wife Kona Liaw proved age is no barrier after winning the men’s and women’s veteran categories, having clocked 25:55 and 31:33 respectively.

Hasrin Sibin from Sabah and Zulkifli Othman from Labuan emerged second and third respectively with 27:18 and 29:42 respectively.

Sabah’s women athlete from Pitas, Marlin Hing won the women’s category as she clocked 29:41, being tailed by a 12-year-old runner from Tenom, Malshiera Jumid, who clocked 31:05 and Chlestie Anna with a time of 33:49.

Siblings Jessica Suip and Stella Suip from Kuala Penyu, Sabah won the fourth and fifth (top 10) in the women’s open category clocking 34:03 and 34:33 respectively.

The men’s open category was won by a Brunei soldier, Mastani  Mohd Yusof, with a time of 24:22,  a couple of seconds ahead of second placed, Fabian@Osmond Damon with 24:47 and Romeo Gomboh (25:00) from Sabah.

The run, organised by Labuan Media Practitioners Association in collaboration with JHK Events, was jointly flagged off by Labuan Member of Parliament Datuk Rozman Isli, Senator Datuk Bashir Alias, Labuan Chamber of Malay Entrepreneurs (DUML) president cum Labuan Liberty Port Management Sdn Bhd chief executive officer Datuk Seri Mohd Alias Abd Rahman, Tunas Rakyat director Datuk Norsiah Abdullah, Labuan Youth and Sports Department director and Information Department director Supian Musa.

“I am pleased with the win today…this was not the first time I took part in the runs in Labuan…the weather and the route played a big part in my performance today and I enjoyed running the last stretch of the scenic route,” said Guianus Salagan.

The ‘classic’ runner from Brunei came in fourth (top ten) with a time of 34:12, behind Santi@Jasmeen Bahar who clocked 34:08 and Chong Vun Lung (Beaufort) with her time of 33:24 in the women’s open category.

“It was an exciting event ever, joining the experienced and new comers together in the run, we will surely come again for any run in Labuan,” Cecilia said.
