KUCHING: The Allianz General Insurance Company (Malaysia) Berhad has come up with an affordable insurance coverage plan for longhouses.

Pos Malaysia Berhad is managing the plan and longhouse chiefs who are interested may contact the office closest to them for more information.

In order to explain the plan, a group from Pos Malaysia led by its area sales manager Sawing Bajing and Allianz General Insurance marketing executive Vera Phang Lee Ping paid a courtesy call on Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Douglas Uggah Embas yesterday at his office.

Uggah who then described the plan as a most interesting for any longhouse said, “The yearly premium is only RM75 for a coverage of RM10,000 which is security in case of fires and natural disasters such as floods and wind storms. It also provides some coverage for each longhouse resident.”

He commented that the conditions of the plan were very reasonable, enabling most longhouses to qualify for property insurance.

“All longhouses should ideally have at least an insurance coverage,” he said.

Uggah remarked that the plan was worth considering and his Bukit Saban state constituency has 94 longhouses.

According to statistics compiled by the Fire and Rescue Department, 12 longhouses statewide had been destroyed by fire this year (as at July 31).

Last year, 24 were destroyed while 26 were destroyed in 2017 — the highest number since 2015.

Seventy percent of the cases were caused by electrical short circuits and 20 percent resulted from negligence while cooking with gas appliances.
