KUCHING: Diabetes in the country is increasing with at least four million people living with the disease,  and Deputy Premier Datuk Amar Dr Sim Kui Hian is concerned.

“The figures keep on increasing, and that does not include people who are not aware that they are diabetic, let alone being diagnosed for diabetes.

“Diabetes is a preventable diseases, however the most important thing is that it starts with us, and there is no reason for us not to be able to prevent it,” he said.

He was speaking at the state-level World Diabetes Day at Kuching Waterfront yesterday (Nov 14).

“One thing we must also understand is that diabetes causes a burden to a lot of people living with it, and the cost of its medicine is very expensive these days.

“It is a lot cheaper to remain healthy at all times than to remain unhealthy, because being healthy will let us live a long, beautiful life,” he said.

On another note, Dr Sim said it is important for the people to stay healthy.

“I urge everyone to engage in an active physical activity. As long as you stay active, it would be good for you and your health.

“Being physically active is one of the few ways for you to reduce your blood sugars. However, of course other than that, you should always watch what you eat.

“All these are important for you and myself, as we do not want the government to spent more money on healthcare in the long run,” he added.

Present during the launching ceremony were chairman of Diabetes Malaysia Sarawak Branch Dr William Voon and other distinguished guest.
