KUCHING: Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Amar Awang Tengah Ali Hassan has appealed to Lawas folk to retain their Lawas identity irrespective of where they reside.

He said they should not forego their identity as sons and daughters of Lawas simply because they have moved out of Lawas.

“You must always maintain your identity as sons and daughters of Lawas,” he said when during a breaking of fast organised by Persatuan Jati Lawas, Kuching branch at a restaurant here Tuesday.

He said moving out of Lawas to bigger towns and cities in search of job is undeniably a valuable experience but it should not be at the expense of one’s identity.

“What is more important is that you must learn to adapt to your new environment and at the same time respect the differences in language, dialect or culture.

“Moving out or migration teaches us about efforts in seeking better livelihood. We should also hold on to religious teaching and good values while respecting those of others,” he advised.
