KUCHING: Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (MPKS) needs more engineers and architects to implement projects under the Integrated Regional Samarahan Development Agency (IRSDA).

Chairman Datuk Peter Minos said MPKS faced a lack of staff to implement IRSDA projects in the future.

“MPKS now has about 200 staff and that number includes two engineers, four assistant engineers, and a chief architect.

“Thus, we really need more engineers and architects to help implement the projects.”

He said this during the 6th MPKS anniversary celebration, which was also attended by Premier Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg, here on Friday (Nov 11).

“We know that Kota Samarahan will not only become an education development hub but will also become a health and agriculture hub.

“This can be seen by projects such as the construction of a cancer treatment centre, the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak healthcare, and the infectious disease research centre which will turn Kota Samarahan into a health metropolis.”

Hence, he said MPKS was ready to cooperate with IRSDA to carry out any project given by IRSDA.

At the same time, Minos also urged Abang Johari to consider the request of Kota Samarahan folk for a new public market.

“This is because the existing public markets such as Bandar Riyal Market are quite small and difficult to accommodate a large number of visitors.

“The limited parking space also makes it difficult for buyers and traders to carry out business activities.”
