KUCHING: Police have successfully dismantled an armed robbery gang known as “Geng Mar” that specifically targeted 24-hour establishments.

Four local men were arrested in separate operations conducted last week in various locations around Kuching.

During a press conference, Kuching OCPD ACP Ahsmon Bajah announced that the arrests were made on June 16 by the Criminal Investigation Division (CID) Special Investigation team, led by Inspector Muzaffar Shah Ibrahim.

The suspects, aged between 24 and 33, were apprehended at Jalan Merdeka, Petra Jaya, Semariang, Tabuan Jaya, and the city area.

“Also seized from the suspects were a knife, clothing and a Toyota Avanza, believed to have been used in the commission of the robberies.

“Background checks revealed that all the suspects had previous criminal and drug-related records, and they tested positive for substances such as syabu and marijuana,” he disclosed.

The suspects are currently in custody until June 23 to facilitate investigations under Section 395/397 of the Penal Code, which deals with armed gang robbery. If convicted, they may face imprisonment for up to 20 years and whipping.
