MUKAH: The mangroves area in Mukah should be maintained to ensure that there are more carbon stores in Sarawak, said Premier Datuk Patimggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He said based on data, mangroves areas store three times more carbon compared to a normal tree.

“That means if we maintain our mangrove area with the plantation of sago and nipah, this will enhance our mangroves area and we can store carbon there.

“And now, we have a new economy that we called as carbon trading. The only state in Malaysia that has the high potential is Sarawak,” he said in his speech during the Mukah Sarawakku Sayang programme here today.

He added that the state has amended its land code which allowed Sarawak to store carbon.

“The carbon can be captured and store in the ground but then our land must be suitable.

“And with statistics and researches stating that our Sarawak waters can store carbon, this is our new financial resources.

“God willing, with the new financial resources, we can increase our income,” he said.

As such, Abang Johari urged the people in Mukah to take care of the mangroves area as it also had economic potentials in terms of its products.

“From mangrove areas, we have the Nipah sugar which fetches high price and has good benefits for our health compared to normal white sugar,” he added.
