Ting delivers his speech

SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) wants to make Sibu a smart city.

As part of the move, SMC chairman Clarence Ting yesterday revealed that the council would no longer send the physical form of assessment rates to households by next year.

“We are giving one year’s notice to all the house owners to register themselves online so that in future, we do not have to physically send the rates to their houses,” he said during the opening of Borneo Digital Technology Forum 2022.

He added that the council also wished to see more applications or services being conducted online.

“In future when you apply for a hawker or coffeeshop licence, you don’t have to come to our office in person,” he said.

Ting also emphasised the importance of the digital platform in shaping the future of today’s society.

“We are going to identify different areas in Sibu, where we will put up this LED screen for you to show your advertisements and products,” he said.

Since digital technology was the future, he urged the people to quickly adapt to the new norm in this digital economy era.

“The state government has approved the smart city concept for the town. I urge everyone to adapt to the new environment or else you will be left behind in the digital platform environment,” said Ting.

He also revealed that the Sarawak government had allocated RM14 million under Smart City project for SMC to set up various facilities for the betterment of the people here.
