Malaysian’s life expectancy reduced by one year due to COVID-19

KUCHING: In Malaysia, the average life expectancy at birth decreased from 74.4 years in 2012 to 73.4 years in 2022 as a result of an increase in the excess fatalities due to COVID-19.

According to The Star, Malaysia now has a shorter life expectancy in comparison to Singapore, Thailand, Brunei, and Vietnam

The Statistics Department recently stated that both men and women in the nation, Malaysians and non-Malaysians, had shorter life expectancies.

According to a graph, the recent decline in life expectancy was the greatest in the previous 10 years.

In 2022, however, it is still anticipated that women will outlive males by 4.5 years.

Men’s life expectancy in Malaysia decreased from 71.7 years in 2012 to 70.8 years in 2022, and women’s life expectancy decreased from 76.8 years to 75.6 years.

Men’s life expectancy decreased for non-Malaysians from 77.2 to 76.4 years, while women’s life expectancy increased little from 77.1 to 77.8 years.

The decline in life expectancy in 2022 applies to people aged 15, 60, and 65 as well.

With men’s birth expectancies of 73.5 years and women’s 79.4 years, the Chinese ethnic group has the longest life expectancy.

In terms of life expectancy from 2020 till this year, Selangor has the highest average.

The lowest for 2020 and 2021 is in Terengganu, while the lowest for 2019 is in Kedah.
