Man fined RM4,200 for syabu possession

KUCHING: A man was fined RM4,200, in default nine months’ jail, by the Magistrate’s Court here today for possessing methamphetamine weighing 1.71g.

Magistrate Syarifah Fatimah Azura Wan Ali meted out the sentence on Evan Jay Tyon after he pleaded guilty to the charge read out by an interpreter.

According to the facts of the case, police arrested Evan Jay in Jalan Mambong, Padawan around 8.45pm on April 28, 2020.

During the subsequent search, he handed over to the police a piece of transparent plastic, which contained lumps of crystal believed to be syabu, a pack of pills suspected to be eramin, a scale, scissors, a small needle, a small straw as well as six small pieces of plastic – all which were inside a small bag.

The crystal lumps were sent to the Department of Chemistry for testing and the results confirmed that they were indeed methamphetamine.

Evan Jay, 23, was charged under Section 12(2) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 and punishable under Section 12(3) of the same Act which carries a fine not exceeding RM100,000 or imprisonment for a maximum of five years or both.

ASP Hisyam Junaidi prosecuted the case while the accused was unrepresented.
