Man pleads not guilty to robbing foreigner

MIRI: A man pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court to a robbery charge and was released on a RM5,000 bail with two sureties.

Jacky Lat, 36, appeared yesterday before Judge Steve Ritikos, who fixed the bail before setting Oct 1 to 4 to hear the case.

The accused, a lorry driver, allegedly robbed a Bangladeshi man of his cellphone and RM500 at a workers quarters in Sungai Tangap Niah, Subis on March 23 at 6.20am.

He will be tried under Section 382 of the Penal Code, which provides for up to 14 years in jail or whipping upon conviction.

ASP Koay Kok Ping appeared for the prosecution while the accused was represented by his counsel Sam Laya.

Earlier, the defence counsel urged the court to reduce the bail from RM10,000 to RM5,000 as the accused has three young children and his wife is not working.
