KUCHING: The Sarawak government is in charge of the Kuching-Samarahan Expressway project, which is overseen by the Sarawak Public Works Department (JKR).

JKR is confident that all parties involved are working hard to ensure improved traffic flow and to lessen roadside hazards for the benefit of the public, particularly road users.

This was stated by the federal Works Minister, Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi, on Dec 3, in response to Stampin MP Chong Chieng Jen’s request that ministers give the Kuching-Samarahan Expressway traffic light project top priority.

“Even though the project is not under the direction of the federal Ministry of Work and JKR, I have enquired about the matter with Sarawak JKR.

“I have been made to understand that the construction works in the area had been temporarily stopped during the recent Christmas and New Year holidays, to facilitate and allow road users in the area to use the route without having to deal with traffic congestion, caused by construction.

“A new contractor has also been appointed in September last year and construction works are currently being carried out according to schedule. The Kuching-Samarahan Expressway traffic light project is expected to be completed by the middle of this year,” he explained.

Nanta said the wellbeing and safety of road users had always been the ministry’s top priority.

He was also informed that Sarawak JKR would issue a comprehensive explanation to the media on the current situation.

“I would like to thank all parties, including YB Chong, for their concern. I believe all parties involved are doing their best to ensure better traffic flow, as well as reducing roadside hazards for the benefit of the public, especially road users.”
