SIBU: A mother and her daughter lost RM2,520 after being scammed which led them to believe that they had won a prize from BigPay.
According to Sibu district police chief, ACP Stanley Jonathan Ringgit, the 53-year-old vegetable seller was at home with her daughter, when she was contacted and informed that she had won a BigPay prize of RM1,000.
“The suspect told her to provide them with their debit card number in order to claim the prize money.
“However, when the suspect said that her debit card was new and couldn’t be processed, the daughter gave the suspect two debit card numbers,” he said in a press statement on Thursday (August 6).
Later around 4pm, when the mother checked her bank account and that of her daughter, she was shocked to discover that RM2,520 had been transferred to an unknown owner of a BigPay account.
“The victim then realised that they had been conned by the suspect, and had been tricked to furnish their bank account details to claim the non-existent prize,” he continued.
The case is being investigated under Section 420 of the Penal Code for cheating, the police chief said.
