SIBU: Senator Robert Lau Hui Yew last Saturday presented minor rural project (MRP) grants to 60 longhouses in the Bawang Assan state constituency.

Lau, who is also the chairman of Sarawak United People’s Party (SUPP) Bawang Assan Branch, said the presentation of the MRP grants  was not an election gimmick but  the responsibility of the government.

“Clearly, there are a handful of parties which  consider the granting of grants as baits or as a way to fish for votes. Any  government  in power has funds for the people.

“We cannot channel these funds to individuals but they can be channelled to longhouses through the Village Development and Security Committees (JKKKs) for the mutual benefit of the residents.

“This is not to fish for votes but based on applications from the longhouse JKKKs   to carry out activities,” he explained.

Lau pointed out since the Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) government was the state government, the grants were for the people.

Lau also reminded the recipients to use the MRP grants wisely.

Also present was  a political secretary to the chief minister Daniel Bujal.
