KUCHING: Sarawak will host the National Training Week 2024 (NTW 2024) in June to boost the skill levels of the state’s workforce.

Federal Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong said the initiative, which is part of the government’s broader efforts to strengthen the economy will offer a range of free training courses to Malaysians of various levels and backgrounds.

“Last year, the government trained 2,500 individuals in Sarawak for free, and this year, it aims to train 10,000 Sarawakians across various courses. The total costs of these courses is over RM20 million,” Sim said.

The government’s emphasis on skills development aligns with its commitment to the Sarawak Corridor of Renewable Energy (SCORE), a significant initiative expected to attract more than RM300 billion in investments by 2030.

He added, to meet the demands of this initiative, the government recognises the need for a skilled workforce and is committed to providing the necessary training to ensure a competitive job market.

The Sarawak skills training initiative is a testament to the government’s commitment to addressing the challenges of the 21st-century economy, particularly in the green economy sector.

On January 24, Sim announced that his ministry aims to enroll 150,000 participants for NTW 2024, led by the Human Resource Development Corporation (HRD Corp), scheduled for June 24-30 this year.

He attributed the ambitious target to the remarkable success of the one-week programme last year, which witnessed the participation of over 129,000 Malaysians in diverse training courses, accumulating more than 500,000 training hours.
