KUCHING: The new prime minister and his cabinet must prioritise the restoration of Sarawak’s constitutional rights and fulfil the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63).

Batu Kitang assemblyman Lo Khere Chiang said the new prime minister must fight for Sarawak’s rights and protect the state’s interests as enshrined in the MA63.

“We need a prime minister who pay great attention and care for the development of Sarawak. Besides that, he must understand the importance and respect the matters that are entailed in the MA63.

“Unfortunately, the previous prime ministers have side lined Sarawak on various accounts. This resulted in us being left behind,” he said when met by reporters at Dewan Perpaduan Batu Kawa on Thursday.

The Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) chairman noted that former prime minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin managed to return the five percent sales tax on the state petroleum products and 10 percent royalty to Sarawak.

“This is something that should be emulated by the next prime minister. We certainly do not want a leader who does not walk the talk. All of Sarawak’s rights including oil and gas resources, education and health autonomy should be controlled by the state itself.

“We want a leader who will respect that (MA63) as well as restoring the eroded rights of Sarawak as stated in MA63,” he added.
