44 arrested in 25 raids

KUCHING: More online gambling reload service providers as well as gamblers have been arrested in the past week as the state CID intensified its operations to stamp out the illegal activities in the state. Sarawak CID chief, Dato’ SAC Dev Kumar said from 11 to 17 December, the state police conducted 25 successful gambling raids that resulted in the arrest of 44 individuals. 14 of the raids were at convenience stores and shops offering online gambling reload services.

The raids were conducted by teams from CID HQs and district CIDs. CID HQs conducted three raids in Kuching and Padawan, Sibu and Miri CIDs conducted five raids each, Kuching and Padawan CIDs conducted four raids each while Kota Samarahan, Bintulu, Serian, Sarikei CIDs conducted one raid each. Dev said the effort to eradicate illegal online gambling continued with raids conducted at 24-hour convenience stores and shops offering reload services to online gamblers.

“Fourteen raids were conducted in eight districts that resulted in the arrest of 27 service providers and gamblers. Forty tablets, mobile phones and cash amounting to RM6,730 were also seized during the raids. “Ten raids were conducted at counters selling illegal 4D in four districts. The raids resulted in the arrest of 10 individuals and seizure of cash amounting to RM2,184. Mobile phones, portable printers, calculators, betting slips and stationery were also seized.

“On 17 December at 4.10 pm, a team from CID Miri conducted a raid at a cock-fighting pit at Kpg Lusut Jaya, Miri and arrested seven individuals for gambling. Gambling paraphernalia and several live and dead cockerels were also seized. “Of the 44 arrested, 34 were males while the rest were females. They were aged between 15 and 67. Six of those arrested were foreigners.

A15-year old boy, a school dropout was also found operating an online reload service at Moyan Commercial Centre, Batu Kawa near Kuching,” he said. All the arrestees are being investigated for committing offences under the Common Gaming House Act, 1953 and Prevention to Cruelty to Animals Ordinance,1962.
