KUCHING: Th e 1Malaysia National Family Month or Bulan Keluarga Kebangsaan 1Malaysia (BKK1M) is to be held as an annual programme in the Pantai Damai constituency. Assistant Minister of Rural Electricity, Dr Abdul Rahman Junaidi said collaboration with var ious organisat ions would ensure the success of such an event.

“BKK1M is an event promoting better relationship among family members, especially in terms of communication. “These days, many of us tend to connect with each other through our gadgets while verbal or face to face communication is getting lesser than it should be. “Hence, BKK1M will also promote the ‘No Gadget Hour’ for families’ campaign, with the hope family members can spend one hour a day talking to one another.

“The campaign is not restricted to any time frame. Families should find the most suitable time to socialise, be it at home or over meals outside from home,” said Abdul Rahman. He was speaking during the closing ceremony of a BKK1M function held at Kampung Sourabaya Ulu, near here yesterday. Rahman, who is also Pantai Damai Assemblyman, added the No Gadget Hour should be practised and become a culture in a family.

“Basically, we should know how to balance quality time between our families, friends and gadgets,” he stressed.

Meanwhi le, ac cording t o a s tu d y c ond u c t e d by the National Population and Family Development Board (LPPKN), 73 per cent of teenagers communicate with their parents through the mobile phone. Some 54.6 per cent communicate through SMS while another 15.6 per cent communicate through the social media.

Another study conducted by the Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC) re v e a l ed tha t the rise of Internet usage among Malaysians has increased from 66.6 per cent in 2014 to 77.6 per cent in 2015. The smart phone is the main gadget to access the Internet, comprising some 89.3 of users.
