LONG BEDIAN: More than 300 Primary 5, 6 and Form 1, 2 and 3 students participated in an ‘Empowering Bahasa Malaysia and Enhancing English Language’ programme here, recently.

Under the initiative of the Ministry of Education, the Programme’s prime objective was to encourage the usage of English extensively among the students and school’s staff.

Among the activities held throughout the three-day and two night programme was English Language Games, Workshop on UPSR, Creative Writing and Motivational talks for students and their parents.

Eight lecturers were the facilitators.

Telang Usan Assemblyman, Dennis Ngau in his speech told the students to start early to think and tell themselves what kind person they wish to be when they grow up and make efforts towards that goal.

“For nearly every pursuit in life by successful individuals today we see this to be the case. Our perceptions and principles guide us in the selection of what we want but ultimately our actions determine whether we get there or not.

“So spend some time thinking about what is important to you and what your priorities are,” he said, adding that it was not enough to wish and hope, but one must act and act rightly.

Dennis said this when officiating at the Highly Immersive Programme at SK Long Bedian jointly organised by the school Parent-Teacher Association (PTA) and Institut Pendidikan Guru Kampus Sarawak, recently.

Stressing the importance of learning, Dennis also suggested that the students read books of great and successful people to motivate them.

Dennis also said the other aspect of life which is very important in today’s context is good character which is a powerful defence against temptations.

He also encouraged the students to be involved in extra-curricular activities in their schools and to avoid getting involved in negative activities such as taking drugs, smoking and others. Instead, he said, they should maintain high discipline throughout their life.

He reminded the students that the learning environment today is very different compared to the environment that his generation went through. For example, students in his generation, studied in class without proper facilities and many students left school as they could not take it or they just did not have the courage to face obstacles coming their way.

He said the government is doing its best to provide conducive learning environment, hence there is no reason for them to fail.

Dennis advised students to just concentrate on their studies as they only need to spend an average of  17 years to reach at least a degree level in their education.

Also present at the event were the school headmaster, Jenggo Jau Jok, teachers and parents.
