KUCHING: State Marine Police (Region 5) will be using a 140-feet-long vessel which functions as a mothership to beef up security control and surveillance in Sarawak waters, especially to curb intrusion by foreign fishing boats.

The vessel will be used by the marine police to carry out operations in certain areas in Sarawak for one month, said its Commander, ACP Salehuddin Mat Zaman.

He said the vessel, known as PT2, was able to carry 10,000 litres of diesel fuel and 10 tonnes of clean water and would be stationed in the waters of Beting Patinggi Ali in the South China Sea.

“Beting Patinggi Ali is a fishing hotspot and therefore it is expected that foreigners would attempt to intrude into the waters to carry out illegal fishing activities. However, with constant surveillance, Sarawak is free from any external threats.

“Currently, PT2 is in Sabah and it will be making its way to Kuching to drop cargos from Port Klang,” said Salehuddin after attending a sacrificial ceremony at Masjid Darul Hana at Marine Police Region 5 Headquarters here yesterday.
