New Consul-General from China arrives in Kuching

KUCHING: His Excellency, Cheng Guangzhong arrived in Kuching yesterday to serve as the new Consul-General of the People’s Republic of China.

He was received on arrival by Datuk Lee Kim Shin, Assistant Minister for Tourism, Arts and Culture, leaders of the Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industries, Chinese association leaders and community leaders.

Also at the airport to welcome the new Consul-General was Deputy Consul-General Zhang Yang.

Cheng said he was impressed by the condusive environment here, which to him was very relaxing.

He pledged to work closely with the Sarawak Government and the people here, especially in promoting businesses.

Lee gave his assurance that the Sarawak Government would extend the same cooperation and support to the new Consul-General, just like his predecessors.

“On behalf of the State Government, I extend my welcome to His Excellency to Sarawak. He can rest assure of the close cooperation and cordial relationship we have with all the past consul-generals here in Kuching.

“We will render all the neccessary cooperation and support and he can be rest assured that this cordial relationship will continue and further strengthen,” Lee said.

Cheng Guangzhong is taking over from his predecessor Fu Ji Jun, who left Sarawak on January 9 and who is now serving as China’s Ambassador to Liberia.

Prior to his appointment here, Cheng Guangzhong served as Minister Consul for four years in Indian.
