KUCHING: A new history created for Sarawak Cricket Association (SCA) when Sarawak’s cricket head coach, Chew Pok Cheong, 45, was appointed as assistant coach of the Malaysian Cricket.

The appointment was made by the highest governing body, Malaysian Cricket Association (MCA) effective from April 1.

“This appointment is an indescribable honour for me as the national assistant coach. I’ll try to give my best to reciprocate the confidence entrusted by the MCA,” said Cheong told reporters recently.

He admitted that the appointment to the position to help prepare the national team for the SEA Games in Kuala Lumpur 2017.

He added that the chance is a valuable experience and will try to adapt as best as possible, especially in the form of cooperation with the head coach (Bilal Asad) who comes from Pakistan.

“I believe such experience cooperating with the head coach (Bilal Asad) is a double credit for my development, especially in improving the sport of cricket in the state,” added Cheong.

Meanwhile, the president of Sarawak Cricket Association (SCA), Awang Mahyan Awang Mohamed was happy with Chew Pok Cheong’s appointment as assistant coach of the national team.

“We are excited over his appointment (Chew Pok Cheong) as assistant coach of the national cricket squad.

“I believe that with the experience he has, he is able to contribute something for the national camp soon,” said Mahyan.
