SIBU: Sibu Municipal Council (SMC) has yet to receive any report of rabies cases, said its Deputy Chairperson Rogayah Jemain. Speaking at a full council meeting yesterday, Rogayah stressed the council’s dog catching team is the most active team in terms of carrying out duties.

“We have been actively catching dogs this year – from January to August we have caught 985 dogs and for this month (until September 19), we have caught 63 dogs.

“SMC will continue to monitor rabies cases from neighbouring areas of jurisdiction as well and will intensify efforts in the fight against rabies to ensure the division remains a buffer zone for the deadly disease,” she said.

As a measure of precaution, Rogayah advised those bitten by dogs to seek immediate medical attention at hospitals, even if they were bitten by their own pets.

She further advised the public to have their dogs vaccinated in the rabies vaccination programme by SMC and the state Veterinary Service Department. According to Rogayah, a vaccination programme will be conducted at Sibu Civic Centre today from 9am to 3pm.
