KUCHING:   Local Government Minister,  Datuk Dr. Sim Kui Hian Sim is full of praise for the  “Wormingup Project” conducted by  Resource Chemistry graduate from Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (UNIMAS), Jeff Wee here.

The three-month long  pilot  environment-friendly project, which  turns organic waste into fertiliser with the help of maggots, began on 1 March this year and ends at the end of May.

It  is  supported by Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) which helps Wee to collect organic waste from the Third Mile Wet Market and sends it to his farm in Kota Sentosa.

During his walkabout programme at the market yesterday,  Sim said:
“This young guy, through his own initiative and with the help of science, has come out with the   fertiliser using the organic waste.

“He implemented the project on 1 March  this year and has collected 4.5 tonnes of organic waste from this wet market alone.

“Can you imagine what will happen if we can do the same thing in other places throughout Sarawak? At least 30 tonnes of organic waste will be turned into fertiliser a month and this will surely  benefit the state.
“I am very interested with this pilot project and my ministry will study   it  before promoting it to  others.

“Although Wee has been doing a good job, he still needs  government support to promote it, “ added Sim.

After the project  ends  at the end of May, Wee will present the results to Sim’s ministry and Sim will propose the project to the government.
