KUCHING: A farewell ceremony from the Ministry of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports (MTACYS) was held in conjunction with the transfer of Datu Ik Pahon Joyik on Wednesday night at Riverside Majestic Hotel here. Prior to the transfer, Ik was the Permanent Secretary to the Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports.

He has been transferred to be the Permanent Secretary to the Minister of Modernisation of Agriculture, Native Land & Regional Development.

Present at the ceremony was the Minister of Tourism, Arts, Culture, Youth and Sports, Datuk Abdul Karim Rahman Hamzah, who described Ik as a dedicated person while he was the MTACYS Permanent Secretary.

“I wish you all the best in the future and I am very sure that the new ministry which you will serve will bring better future to you,” he added. Speaking during his farewell ceremony, Ik advised younger officers to not be afraid of being transferred to new places. “Being a civil servant, one of the things that we should accept is transfer. “This is what I want to share with the younger officers because some of them are scared to be transferred. When you are promoted, the first thing that comes to your mind is that you will be transferred along with additional responsibilities and tasks, so do not be scared.

“We will never know what is on the other horizon as challenges are everywhere. But, if you take it openly, it would not be that bad,” he said. Ik revealed that his career started on December 1, 1983 as a Sarawak Administrative Officer (SAO) at the Sibu District Office.

“From thereon, I was transferred 10 times during my 35 years of service with an average of three and a half years, and my shortest transfer period was for two months when I was a development officer in Sri Aman.

“I am sharing this as some of you are scared to be transferred. So, take the challenge because there must be something, possibly silver lining, look at that as fair for transfer,” he said.
