KUCHING: The state government has been asked to consider whether grass-cutting services by local councils can be considered under essential services during the movement control order (MCO) period.

Kota Samarahan Municipal Council (KSMC) chairman Datuk Peter Minos said, personally he hopes the government will decide to allow grass-cutting service to continue as he worries long grasses could be the breeding ground for mosquitoes which is dangerous for the residents.

Minos was responding to Kuching MP Dr Kelvin Yii’s statement which he called upon local councils to allow grass-cutting services to resume during the MCO in order to keep general environmental hygiene and to curb the spread of any unwanted diseases such as dengue caused by Aedes mosquitoes.

“We will hear and wait for the government’s decision, if it is allowed, we will do it,” he said.

He said grass-cutting is not and has not been declared as essential service, which is why KSMC does not allow its contractor to carry on the service.

“But I am sure the government and the Ministry of Local Government and Housing is in the know about this grass-cutting issue.

“I will forward our views but it is up to them to decided and give us the green light,” Minos said, adding that all councils have been strictly obeying the MCO.
