SIBU: Rather than forming a new government, Gabungan Parti Sarawak (GPS) coalition would focus on maintaining and ensuring the stability of the existing federal government.

Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu (PBB) secretary-general Datuk Alexander Nanta Linggi said the GPS is already part of the government of the day and thus, he does not see any good reason for it to switch sides now.

“For now, there is no need for GPS to form another government when we are already in the government.

“Instead, we want the existing federal government led by the Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin to be maintained and remain stable because we do not need a new round of political turmoil.

“We need a stable government to take on the responsibility of solving the nation’s crises such as Covid-19 pandemic and challenges to recover our economy,” he told the media when met at the Sibu Airport here on Monday (Oct 5).

Nanta who is also the Federal Minister of Domestic Trade and Consumer Affairs further said that the issue of the opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s persistence in wanting to be prime minister is not a new story, as it is his decade-long quest.

“Recently, Anwar claimed that he has the majority support from lawmakers to form a new government and some of the names he listed were GPS MPs including Hulu Rajang MP Datuk Wilson Ugak Kumbong.

“However, Wilson told me that he was also surprised that his name was in the list when for a fact, he did not support Anwar.

“If it’s true that Anwar has gained the majority support, he will take over then,” he pointed out.

On Sept 23, Anwar who is also the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) president, claimed that he has enough MP support to form the government.

On Oct 3, he published a list of 121 MPs supporting him to be the next prime minister. Four of them were GPS MPs; Wilson, Datuk Seri Richard Riot Jaem (Serian), Datuk Seri Tiong King Sing (Bintulu) and Anyi Ngau (Baram).
